Five-Piece Melamine vs. Dovetail: A Surprisingly Civil Discussion

Choosing between a five-piece white melamine drawer and a wooden dovetail drawer starts with what you want the finished drawer to do and look like. Both deserve a complete specification.

There will be no winner's podium. We could not justify the floor space.

First, untangle the names

Melamine describes a surface material commonly used on manufactured panels. Dovetail describes a joint. They are different kinds of information. "Five-piece" generally refers to the two sides, front, back and bottom; it does not, by itself, explain how those pieces are connected.

Ask what the actual panel core, thickness, edge treatment, joint and bottom construction will be. For the dovetail option, ask about the wood, thickness, joint fit and finish. You are buying a drawer, not merely the adjective nearest its photograph.

Choose the appearance you want to see

White melamine offers a uniform interior that can suit a straightforward cabinet scheme. A wood dovetail box exposes the grain and corner joinery when opened. That visible detail may matter to you, your client or the person who inspects everybody's kitchen drawers at parties.

Neither appearance determines whether the box is the right size.

Consider cleaning and everyday treatment

Follow the panel or finish manufacturer's care instructions. EGGER's guidance for its melamine-faced chipboard warns that even a resistant surface should not be used as a cutting surface. That is a useful reminder that "easy to clean" does not mean immune to damage. [1]

Edge treatment, exposed holes and the underlying panel also deserve attention. For a wood box, obtain the care guidance for the actual finish. Avoid making maintenance promises based on a generic material name.

The kitchen has already supplied a chopping board. Allow it to retain its position.

Compare the whole quote

Put the same outside dimensions, quantity and intended contents on both requests. Check whether assembly, finish, edge treatment and hardware preparation are included. Compare delivery arrangements and any separate slide cost.

One low number may describe an unfinished box while another includes preparation and assembly. That comparison is less a bargain hunt than a reading exercise.

We do not attach a fixed price difference here. Actual cost depends on the specified build and order.

Hardware still gets a vote

The slide system must suit the chosen box construction. Manufacturer planning requirements can constrain the geometry and preparation; changing materials does not waive those requirements. [2]

For a heavily used or unusually large drawer, ask about the complete assembly rather than assuming the surface or joint name establishes its capacity.

A reasonable decision

Choose white melamine when its appearance and specified construction suit the project. Choose a dovetail box when visible wood and interlocking joinery are part of what you want. In either case, check dimensions, bottom support, hardware and finishing details before approving the order.

We are happy to discuss both without insulting your kitchen.

It is a surprisingly low bar for an internet comparison article. We intend to clear it.
